⛳ Rory McIlroy overcomes post-Masters slump: “I’m ready to win again – and The Open is next”
After three tumultuous months since claiming the green jacket at Augusta, Rory McIlroy has spoken out about the struggles he’s faced – and sent a warning to his rivals: he’s back, and The Open at Portrush will be the place to prove it.
🧠 “I’ve achieved my dream, but there’s still a lot more to do”
Winning the 2025 Masters not only helped McIlroy complete his career Grand Slam, but also marked a major turning point in his career. However, instead of soaring, McIlroy fell into a state of “emptiness” after achieving his biggest goal in life.

“I’ve done what I always said I wanted to do. But I still feel like there’s a lot more to give,” McIlroy shared at Royal Portrush.
“I probably didn’t give myself enough time to let things settle. But that’s professional golf – you’re always in a rut, and it’s hard to get out.”

📉 Three months of struggle and a boost from Scotland
After the Masters, McIlroy went through a string of disappointing results: T-47 at the PGA Championship, missed the cut at the RBC Canadian Open, and played inconsistently at the U.S. Open. Many experts believe he is suffering from “post-achievement syndrome” – a psychological state often experienced by athletes after achieving a major goal.

However, at the Scottish Open, McIlroy had an impressive performance, finishing second to Chris Gotterup. Despite having only four hours of sleep before flying to Portrush to practice, he was still enthusiastic:
“I’m excited about where I am. I feel like I’ve found my consistency and joy in every shot.”
🏠 Portrush – a place of memories and opportunities
The 2025 Open at Royal Portrush holds special significance for McIlroy. It was here that he missed the cut in 2019, after a quadruple-bogey on the first hole. But this time, he has prepared both physically and mentally.
“I remember the applause on the first hole that year and the feeling of not being ready to face it. This year, I want to embrace it, not hide from it.”
McIlroy admits that when he drew up his 2025 schedule, The Open at Portrush was the tournament that was red-circled, even more important than the Masters.
🗣️ A warning to opponents
With his confidence returning, McIlroy is not shy about sending a message to his opponents:
“I want to win this tournament. And I believe I have the ability to do it.”
⏳ Rory McIlroy climbed the Everest of his career at Augusta. But now he’s looking for the next mountain to climb. And if things go his way, The Open at Portrush will be where he continues his legendary journey.
