Pope Leo XIV criticizes Trump and MAGA, saying opposing abortion while supporting the death penalty or harsh treatment of immigrants isn’t truly pro-life

Pope Leo XIV, the first U.S.-born pope, has publicly criticized former President Donald Trump’s immigration policies and the death penalty, questioning their alignment with the Catholic Church’s pro-life teachings. Speaking from his residence in Castel Gandolfo, Leo emphasized that life is sacred “from conception until natural death,” and expressed concern over policies that contradict this principle.

In a recent interview, Pope Leo stated, “Someone who says ‘I’m against abortion but says I am in favor of the death penalty’ is not really pro-life. Someone who says that ‘I’m against abortion, but I’m in agreement with the inhuman treatment of immigrants in the United States,’ I don’t know if that’s pro-life.”

These remarks have sparked controversy among conservative Catholics, many of whom supported Leo for his traditionalist stance and low-profile approach on contentious social issues. However, his recent criticism of U.S. President Donald Trump’s harsh immigration policies, which he implied contradict the Church’s pro-life teachings, has caused a rift with his conservative base.

Despite the backlash, Pope Leo has remained steadfast in his advocacy for immigrants, a priority shaped by his missionary work in Peru. Vatican officials maintain that while Leo seeks unity within a polarized Church, he will not abandon his values to appease critics.

This incident highlights the ongoing debate within the Catholic Church regarding the application of pro-life principles in contemporary political issues. Pope Leo’s comments suggest a broader understanding of what it means to be pro-life, encompassing not only opposition to abortion but also support for the dignity and rights of all individuals, including immigrants.

As the Church navigates these complex issues, Pope Leo XIV’s leadership continues to challenge traditional interpretations and encourage a more inclusive approach to pro-life advocacy.
