People Found The More Than 2,000-year-old Antikythera Mechanism That Calculated Solar And Lunar Eclipses Off The Coast Of Greece In 1901

The Antikythera Mechanism is often hailed as the world’s first “computer”. This remarkable device was recovered from a shipwreck off the coast of Greece in 1901, offering a glimpse into the advanced scientific and technical capabilities of the ancient Greeks. It is currently housed at the National Archaeological Museum of Athens.

According to the latest research, the Antikythera Mechanism dates back to around 205 BC. This intricate device was capable of predicting astronomical positions, tracking solar and lunar eclipses, and even recording the cycles of the Olympic Games.

The mechanisms within the Antikythera device were astonishingly advanced for their time, showcasing a complexity that surpasses any tool discovered from the subsequent 1,000 years. The device contains 30 corroded bronze gears, a testament to the sophisticated craftsmanship of its creators. A reconstructed 3D model of the mechanism reveals that it was a brilliant fusion of Babylonian astronomy, Platonic mathematics, and ancient Greek astronomical theories.

Despite its brilliance, modern research on the Antikythera Mechanism faces significant challenges, primarily because only one-third of the original device has survived to this day. This limited preservation complicates efforts to fully understand and appreciate the ingenuity of this ancient invention.
