Laurent Mekies: “Max Verstappen is the backbone of the Red Bull – Ford Project”

Since his appointment as a new team boss of Red Bull Racing, Laurent Mekies has not wasted time to share his vision for the future. The Frenchman, who previously earned his spurs at Ferrari and Alphatauri, emphasized this weekend that Max Verstappen is “one of the most important pillars” in the historical collaboration between Red Bull and Ford.

According to Mekies, the introduction of the Ford Red Bull Powertrains (RBPT) in 2026 is not only a technical revolution, but also a strategic moment at which the role of Verstappen will be crucial. “Max is more than a driver. He is a leader, a brand and a source of inspiration for our entire team,” says Mekies. “His presence not only gives this project credibility, but also guarantees that the RB21, our new car for 2026, can perform immediately at the highest level.”

The RB21, currently in development, is the first car to be fully equipped with the new Ford RBPT power source. 2026 thus marks the start of an era in which sustainability and hybrid efficiency form the core of Formula 1 regulations. Mekies explained that the close cooperation between the engineers in Milton Keynes and the technicians of Ford in Detroit symbolize a “fusion of European racing culture and American innovation.”

Verstappen plays a key role in this. The triple world champion is intensively involved in the feedback cycles and technical simulations. According to sources close to the team, he not only gives input about driving behavior and balance, but he also thinks about the interaction between chassis and Power Unit. Mekies confirmed that: “Max has a unique sense of detail. After a few rounds he can designate exactly where improvements are needed. His input is invaluable in the development of the RB21.”

The choice of Mekies to put Verstappen at the center of his strategy is no coincidence. Since his accession to Red Bull in 2016, the Dutchman brought the team to unprecedented heights. Under his leadership, Red Bull has won several world titles and ushered in an era of dominance. Ford also sees Verstappen a sign that appeals to fans worldwide.

Yet there are challenges lurking. The farewell of Honda at the end of 2025 creates uncertainty and pressure. Can Ford RBPT come directly to the level that Red Bull is used to? Mekies remains optimistic: “We know that the transition is challenging, but with our knowledge, the support of Ford and the use of Max we are convinced that we will keep the top. The RB21 project is not just a car, it is a statement of ambition.”

Mekies’ words are interpreted by many as an attempt to keep peace and confidence within the team after a period of internal shifts. His leadership style seems to be revolving for transparency, cooperation and the complete use of Verstappen’s talent.

Whether the RB21 will indeed put a new benchmark will be apparent in 2026. But one thing is clear: for Laurent Mekies, Max Verstappen is not only the key to success, but also the symbol of Red Bulls new era with Ford.
