Omar said, “Minneapolis needs a leader who truly fights for working people. This is our chance to create a city where everyone can succeed. I’m proud to support my friend and colleague, Omar Fateh, as my first choice for mayor on November 4th, and I hope you will too.”

U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar has officially endorsed State Senator Omar Fateh in the upcoming Minneapolis mayoral election, scheduled for November 4, 2025. In her endorsement, Omar described Fateh as “a champion for working people,” emphasizing his commitment to addressing the needs of Minneapolis residents. Omar expressed her enthusiasm for supporting Fateh, stating, “I’m proud to support my friend and colleague, Omar Fateh, as my first choice for mayor on November 4th, and I hope you will too.”

Fateh, who represents Minnesota’s 62nd Senate District, has been an advocate for progressive policies, including raising the minimum wage, implementing rent stabilization measures, and enhancing tenant protections. His platform also focuses on affordable housing, public safety, and labor rights. Fateh’s endorsement by Omar, a prominent figure in the Democratic-Farmer-Labor (DFL) Party, is seen as a significant boost to his campaign.

The endorsement comes amid a contentious primary process. In July 2025, Fateh secured the DFL endorsement for mayor, defeating incumbent Mayor Jacob Frey. However, the Minnesota DFL revoked the endorsement in August, citing technical issues during the convention. Despite this setback, Fateh has continued to garner support from various community leaders and organizations.

Omar’s endorsement underscores a growing divide within the DFL, with progressive factions rallying behind Fateh’s vision for a more equitable Minneapolis. As the election approaches, all eyes will be on how this endorsement influences voter turnout and the overall dynamics of the mayoral race.
